Biography :

Dr. Benjamin Fung is a Canada Research Chair in Data Mining for Cybersecurity, a Full Professor of School of Information Studies (SIS) at McGill University, and an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Data and Engineering (TKDE) and Elsevier Sustainable Cities and Society (SCS). He received a Ph.D. degree in computing science from Simon Fraser University in 2007. Collaborating closely with the national defense, law enforcement, transportation, and healthcare sectors, he has published over 140 refereed articles that span across the research forums of data mining, machine learning, privacy protection, and cybersecurity with over 13,000 citations. A report from Stanford University identified him to be among the top 2% scientists worldwide. His data mining works in crime investigation and authorship analysis have been reported by media, including New York Times, BBC, CBC, etc. Dr. Fung is an Associate Member of MILA and a licensed professional engineer in software engineering.

Machine Learning for Authorship and Malware Analyses

Abstract :

In this talk, we will discuss two research problems in authorship and malware analyses. (1) Given an anonymous e-mail or some tweets, can we identify the author or infer the author's characteristics based on his/her writing styles? I will present a representation learning method for authorship analysis. (2) Assembly code analysis is one of the critical processes for mitigating the exponentially increasing threats from malicious software. However, it is a manually intensive and time-consuming process even for experienced reverse engineers. An effective and efficient assembly code clone search engine can greatly reduce the effort of this process. We have implemented an award-winning assembly clone search engine called Kam1n0. It is the first clone search engine that can efficiently identify a given query assembly function's subgraph clones from a large assembly code repository. I will give a live demonstration of Kam1n0.

Biography:

Dajin Wang received the B.Eng. degree in computer engineering from Shanghai University of Science and Technology in 1982, and the Ph.D. degree in computer science from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1990. Since 1990 he has been with the Department of Computer Science at Montclair State University, New Jersey, USA, where he has been a Professor of Computer Science since 2002. He has received college- and university-level awards for his scholarly accomplishments, has held visiting positions in other universities, and has consulted in industry. His main research interests include interconnection networks, fault tolerant computing, algorithmic robotics, parallel processing, and wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. He has published over one-hundred papers in these areas, many of which appeared in premier journals including IEEE Transactions on Computers, IEEE TPDS, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, J. of Parallel and Distributed Computing, and Parallel Computing. He has served on the program committees of influential conferences. He served as an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems from 2010 to 2014.

System-level Diagnosis and Fault-tolerant Network Embedding: Introduction and Recent Results

Abstract :

Attackers on networks nowadays become more widespread and post more clear and present threats. In the meantime, the ever-growing size of networks increases the vulnerability of system components. The robustness of networks has therefore been an especially crucial issue and research topic. In this talk I will give an introduction of system-level diagnosis, a test scheme that is capable of self-diagnosing multiple faulty nodes in a network. The fundamental concepts of the field will be introduced, and some newly published results will be presented.

Biography :

Layth Sliman received the degree in computer engineering, then master’s degree in computer science, and then the Ph.D. degree from INSA Lyon, in collaboration with the University of the Ryukyus, Japan. After that he received his Habilitation for Research Direction from the University of Paris Saclay, France. Layth Sliman’s main interests are Resilient Distributed Systems, Middleware, Privacy by Design, Blockchain, Cryptography, Access Control, and Identity Management.

Since September 2010, he worked as an Associate Professor at Efrei, Paris Panthéon-Assas- University. He is currently researcher and “Trust, and Security research” team leader at EFREI, Paris Panthéon- Assas University.

From 2000 to 2014, Layth Sliman worked as a Lecturer and did his research on distributed systems engineering and information security in many universities including INSA, Lyon France; the University of the Ryukyus, Japan; Beijing University of Technology, China; and the Institute of Visual Informatics, Malaysia.

Layth Sliman has been deeply involved in many national and international research projects such as Semeuse, Intreprod and Sygeo (France), and Exec&Share and Okinawa Road (Japan). He also participated in the creation of many PoCs and open-source products like PEtALS and OrchaLang. He received many awards, scholarship and Grants from France and Japan. He supervised many Ph.D. theses in collaboration with the industry. He published more than 50 international publications and communications.

He delivered many keynotes and invited talks in France, USA, Italy, India, Malaysia, Japan and Spain. He has chaired and organized more than ten outstanding international conferences including IEEE-WETICE and IFIP-NTMS. He is expert in National Accreditation Commission of Engineering Degree in France (CTI).

OrchaLand : Towards a BizDevOp Smart Contract-based Collaboration Framework

Abstract :

Thanks to the advances in mobile, IoT, Cloud and Edge Computing, many sharing economy models such as virtual marketplaces, industry 4.0, and distributed supply chain have emerged. These models open up the possibility to reduce costs and time, improve quality and boost innovation. Nevertheless, this form of open collaboration that involves unknown partners is only possible if the trust is established by the system through technical measures such as traceability, transparency, and the automation of execution of the collaboration agreements that define the expectations and responsibilities of each partner. In this context, the Blockchain appears as an ideal solution which brings traceability, transparency, security along with the automatic execution through Smart Contract technology. In this keynote, I will introduce OrchaLand, a new framework that is sought to enable a unified, complete, Low-Code and No-Ops Smart Contract-based collaboration lifecycle (specification, design, deployment, integration and execution of collaboration Smart Contracts).

Biography :

Lamia CHAARI FOURATI is a professor at Computer Science and Multimedia Higher Institute), Sfax University, and researcher at Digital Research Center of Sfax (CRNS), Laboratory of Signals, systeMs, aRtificial Intelligence, neTworkS (SM@RTS). She focused her research activities on conception and validation of new protocols and mechanisms for emerging networks technologies. Her research interests include, but are not limited to, wireless access networks, sensor networks, vehicular networks, Internet of things, 5G/6G, software-defined network, information centric network and wireless body area network, unmanned aerial vehicle, software-defined networking, cloud computing, edge/fog computing, and next-generation heterogeneous wireless networks. In these areas, she is interested in quality of services provisioning (congestion control, admission control, resources allocations…), trust management, and securing communication systems.

Professor FOURATI, over the years, has produced several publications in the form of refereed book chapters, journal articles, and conference papers. She has more than 80 papers published in journals and more than 120 papers published in conferences. She further serves on the Technical Program Committees of several reputed international conferences. Prof. Lamia CHAARI FOURATI is the laureate for the Kwame Nkrumah Regional Awards for women 2016 (North Africa Region).

Security and Trust Management in the Internet of Vehicles Environment

Abstract :

In recent years, the emergence of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) aims to enhance the users’ quality of experience through proposing sophisticated services ranging from guaranteeing the user safety to improving his comfort. The IoV ecosystem is complex, heterogeneous, and evolving. Many entities participate to compose its architecture (such as vehicles, humans, roadside units, ITS). Moreover, different communication types co-exist to ensure the IoV connectivity and continuity. This diversity leads to new security requirements that seem more complex to take into account and enlarge the attack surface of such ecosystem. Many security mechanisms should be considered to enforce the security of IoV environment at many levels: data, entities, communications, storage, etc.. Trust management is one of the potential security mechanisms that aims to increase the reliability within the IoV environment. The topic has been widely explored within the vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). However, the VANET represents only one component of the IoV ecosystem. Thus, the approaches proposed for the VANET should be adapted to be applied for the IoV.

Moreover, the advent of the emerging technologies like Blockchain, Cloud, SDN as well as artificial intelligence bring new opportunities to propose more relevant approaches within the trust management mechanisms within the IoV context. Accordingly, this tutorial introduces the IoV environment, the security and trust challenges and attacks in the vehicular context. Afterwards, this tutorial overviews the main concepts related to the trust management with highlighting relevant trustworthiness attributes indispensable for determining the trust score of a particular vehicle in an IoV network. Several approaches to categorize a vehicle as trustworthy or untrustworthy in nature would be scketched. The tutorial would pinpoint several sorts of malicious attacks that could affect a trust-based IoV network along with their respective mitigation techniques. Open issues and future research directions relevant to the tutorial subject would be discussed too.

By the end of this short tutorial, the audience would be equipped with the necessary skill set toward a critical thinking for formulating intelligent trust approaches on their own.
